Civil engineers create and oversee the vast infrastructure systems modern communities rely on, including transportation networks, structures, water management systems, and environmental facilities. As stewards of our built environment, Civil Engineers manage over 10% of Canada's national economic output - more than any other professional field. Since their work directly serves the public, Civil Engineers must consider the broader human implications of their projects, addressing ethical, community, and regulatory concerns. Whether specializing or working broadly, Civil Engineers integrate knowledge from physical sciences, social sciences, and various engineering disciplines. Recent years have seen increasing collaboration across fields, blurring traditional engineering boundaries. The analytical and problem-solving skills developed through Civil Engineering education are highly valued across diverse sectors including urban development, finance, and management.
The Master of Applied Science program emphasizes research and offers both full-time and part-time options, with full-time participation strongly recommended. Full-time students typically complete this two-year program with coursework concentrated in the first year and research dominating the second. MASc admission requires securing a faculty supervisor in your specialization area who will provide research guidance and financial support. Prospective MASc applicants should ideally contact potential supervisors in their desired research field before applying online. While not mandatory, this preliminary contact helps assess compatibility between student interests and faculty expertise. Applicants should specify their preferred supervisor(s) in the designated section of the online application form.
