Environmental Systems Engineering (ESE) specializes in safeguarding water resources, ecosystems, and urban environments. For three decades, UBC's ESE Group has maintained international prominence in this discipline. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Group pioneered biological phosphorus removal methods. The 1990s saw the Group play a pivotal role in advancing Canada's eco-friendly innovations across natural resource industries (like forestry) and municipal/agricultural water treatment systems. Entering the 21st century, the Group remains at the cutting edge by creating and implementing solutions for pressing environmental issues worldwide. Current research initiatives explore waste-to-resource conversion (including anaerobic membrane bioreactors, nutrient recovery systems, and phosphorus crystallization) and advanced water purification techniques (such as integrated biological treatment, water recycling systems, and membrane filtration).
