To earn a PhD degree, candidates must fulfill key requirements including submitting a completed thesis, defending their work, and passing a comprehensive exam. Each student is assigned an Advisory Committee that offers support, direction, and regular progress evaluations to facilitate degree completion. Vision Science students must present their thesis proposal to this committee by their fourth term (or sixth term for part-time students). Full-time PhD students must complete at least 4 terms (for those entering with an MSc), with a maximum duration of 12 terms (4 years). Extensions require submitting a Petition of Extension with a proposed completion timeline. The University of Waterloo's School of Optometry and Vision Science stands as Canada's sole English-language institution offering an accredited Doctor of Optometry program, alongside graduate studies in Vision Science and Optometry. Its comprehensive clinic programs deliver hands-on training for students while providing community healthcare services.
