The Biology Department provides graduate programs leading to M.Sc. (Master of Science) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees, both requiring thesis work. Students in these programs must complete coursework, typically chosen from Biology Department offerings, though courses from other university departments or institutions may count with advisory committee approval. A minimum of two courses must be selected from the Biology Department's curriculum. Additionally, all graduate students must complete the Graduate Academic Integrity Module - an online course to be finished within the initial 8 weeks of their first term, which will appear on their academic record. The Integrity Office will notify students about this requirement, distinct from the mandatory Academic Integrity Workshop.
Molecular Biology has been a departmental focus since recombinant DNA methods emerged, with expanded expertise through faculty additions during the 1990s and 2000s. Today, molecular biology techniques permeate all departmental research areas. The Department plays a pioneering role in Synthetic Biology initiatives, conceptualized as integrating biological science with engineering principles to create organisms and biological systems with specific functions.
