Biology explores living organisms, examining their composition, operations, organization, beginnings, and development.
Pursuing biology opens doors to diverse career paths, from lab and field research to environmental analysis, healthcare, teaching, and corporate sectors. Our specialized tracks (discontinued after Fall 2020) – including Animal Physiology, Ecology and Environmental Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and Plant Biology – equip students with focused expertise for these dynamic professions.
The Biology curriculum offers flexibility, enabling students to pair core courses in Genetics, Cell Biology, Physiology, Ecology, Plant Biology, and Human Anatomy with studies in arts, humanities, languages, and mathematics. Practical learning occurs through laboratory sessions, tutorials, and field excursions across biological disciplines.
Investigate life in all its forms – from microscopic cellular structures to entire ecosystems. Biology has yielded groundbreaking scientific achievements like human genome sequencing, DNA structure identification, and photosynthesis mechanisms. These breakthroughs emerged when curious researchers approached nature with fresh perspectives. At Waterloo, students immerse in Biology studies immediately, choosing from over 80 specialized courses spanning microbiology, genetics, botany, and zoology. Graduates enter careers in research, environmental evaluation, education, healthcare, or industry. Co-op participants gain up to two years of paid professional experience. Develop practical expertise through field courses in terrestrial, aquatic, and marine environments at locations like Algonquin Park and Jamaica. Connect with fellow biology enthusiasts through the Biology Undergraduate Society (BUGS), which hosts academic networking, tutoring, and social activities.
