The Medical Science Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs provide diverse opportunities across fundamental sciences, clinical research, and population health studies. These full-time MSc and PhD programs focus primarily on practical research rather than classroom instruction. The Institute of Medical Science (IMS) serves as the top choice for physicians pursuing clinician-investigator training, with alumni securing academic and healthcare leadership roles in universities, government agencies, and private sector organizations. IMS collaborates with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons through its Clinical Investigator Program (CIP).

Biomedical Communication represents a unique interdisciplinary field combining art, science, medicine, and communication principles. Canada's only program of its kind, the Master of Science in Biomedical Communication (MScBMC) ranks among four globally accredited programs in this specialty. Through its two-year curriculum, the MScBMC program trains students in developing and assessing various visual communication tools, including medical illustrations, digital media design, animations, and virtual reality simulations.
An appropriate BSc or an MD degree from a recognized university and academic credentials and background preparation appropriate to the field of study. Qualified university graduates with a professional health science degree (e.g., MD, BScN) or an undergraduate arts and science degree of appropriate background who wish to pursue graduate studies in basic or clinical biomedical sciences are encouraged to apply.
Applicants lacking adequate background in biological, natural, or social sciences may be required to take undergraduate or graduate courses considered necessary to provide a proper basis for their research.
A- (80%) average in the final year of undergraduate study and an A– cumulative average over three of the four total years of study.
English language requirements
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component.
Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Including Writing and Speaking Sections: Overall score: 93; Writing: 22; Speaking: 22
Academic English Level 60: Required score: B
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Online: Required score: 70 minimum total with at least 60 in each part.
The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE): Required score: 76 minimum total with at least 22 in each component and 32 in writing
Cambridge Assessment English: Required score: minimum 185 overall with at least 176 in each component.
