The Environmental Geosciences specialist program explores the interconnected relationships among Earth's systems (biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere) while covering fundamental subjects like earth materials, aqueous geochemistry, hydrogeology, sedimentary geology, geomorphology, and biogeochemistry. Designed to equip students for diverse careers in industry, government, and academia, this program provides essential knowledge for roles in environmental consulting, water quality assessment, waste management, and sustainability initiatives.
The Geoscience Major program begins with foundational courses and offers flexible electives tailored to students' interests. Many participants combine this program not only with other science disciplines but also with fields like geography, archaeology, economics, history, political science, or peace and conflict studies.
Our curriculum prioritizes practical experience through laboratory work and field studies. Each program mandates at least one field course, with several offering optional excursions ranging from single-day trips to two-week expeditions. Recent destinations have included Newfoundland, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Chile, and New Zealand, while undergraduate research groups have conducted fieldwork in Turkey, Peru, Greece, and South Africa. These immersive experiences help build professional networks, enhance teamwork abilities, facilitate hands-on education, and create valuable mentoring relationships between students and faculty. We also encourage students to pursue additional opportunities such as study abroad programs, summer exchanges, internships, or work placements with industry and non-governmental organizations.
