The Department for the Study of Religion (DSR) serves as a dynamic hub for academic exploration, offering in-depth examination of various religious and spiritual traditions through historical, cultural, political, and textual lenses. Situated in one of the world's most religiously and culturally diverse urban centers, our undergraduate programs draw students from all backgrounds who share an interest in understanding religion through scholarly inquiry. Our curriculum spans multiple faith traditions—Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Indigenous spiritual practices, Islam, and Judaism—while also addressing fundamental human concerns like happiness, creation stories, suffering, and relationships. Whether students come from religious backgrounds or none at all, our inclusive classrooms welcome everyone. The program develops essential analytical, writing, and linguistic skills while exploring religion's intersections with power dynamics, creative expression, and social conflicts. Students investigate how religious experiences connect with identity markers like gender, sexuality, and race. Many DSR undergraduates pair their religious studies with complementary disciplines such as environmental science, political theory, computer technology, gender studies, or interdisciplinary fields like international relations and cognitive science.
Additionally, the DSR participates in The Arts & Science Internship Program (ASIP), providing professional work experience opportunities for qualifying Arts & Science students within designated study programs.
