The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering pioneers innovative research across eight key disciplines. Mechanical engineering focuses on robotics, mechanics and design, materials science, and thermofluids, while industrial engineering covers human factors, information systems, operations research, and practical machine learning applications. PhD candidates at MIE collaborate with distinguished faculty to develop expertise for research careers or executive roles in industry. The doctoral program centers on an original thesis project guided by faculty advisors. Students also engage in hands-on engineering practice through comprehensive design projects, where teams develop creative solutions for real-world client challenges. The Capstone Design course (MIE490/MIE491) serves as a culminating experience during the final year's fall and winter terms.
Admission to the PhD program is reserved for those who are able to present evidence of superior academic and research ability. Students may be admitted to the PhD program with an appropriate University of Toronto master's degree or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum B+ average.
