The University of Toronto's History Department provides an extensive graduate program for both MA and PhD candidates. With around 70 faculty members, the department covers diverse historical fields including Canadian, American, Medieval, Early Modern, and Modern European/British history, along with Eastern Europe, Russia, Latin America, Africa, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, International Relations, Medical History, and Women's History.
Beyond departmental offerings, the university boasts exceptional historical research facilities. The Robarts Library stands as one of North America's premier humanities and social sciences collections, while specialized archives are housed across campus. Notable resources include the Centre for Medieval Studies and Pontifical Institute for Medieval Studies' European collections, plus interdisciplinary opportunities through the Munk School of Global Affairs, Institute for History and Philosophy of Science, Criminology Centre, Urban Studies Institute, and European/Russian/Eurasian Studies Center. The department actively engages in cross-disciplinary collaborative programs.
Applicants may enter the PhD program with an MA degree in history or its equivalent with an A– average or better.
Applicants must satisfy the department of their ability to do independent research at an advanced level.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component.
Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Including Writing and Speaking Sections: Overall score: 93; Writing: 22; Speaking: 22
Academic English Level 60: Required score: B
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Online: Required score: 70 minimum total with at least 60 in each part.
The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE): Required score: 76 minimum total with at least 22 in each component and 32 in writing
Cambridge Assessment English: Required score: minimum 185 overall with at least 176 in each component.
