The Department of Art and Design provides graduate education culminating in Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Art History, Design, and Visual Culture, along with Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design degrees across various studio disciplines. Additionally, the department offers Master of Arts programs in Art History, Design, and Visual Culture. The MDes program focuses on advanced training in either Visual Communication Design or Industrial Design, while the MFA program offers specialized study in Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, or DrawingIntermedia.
The curriculum requires completion of 18 graduate-level units: one mandatory 3-unit course [HADVC 600 or HADVC 677]; one 3-unit 500- or 600-level course in the student's chosen specialization; and 12 units from approved graduate courses, which may include cross-disciplinary offerings or independent study options like museum apprenticeships. Students must also demonstrate proficiency in at least one foreign language relevant to their studies. Course selection is made collaboratively between the student and their academic advisor, the HADVC Graduate Advisor, or the Department's Associate Chair of Graduate Studies.
