Founded in 1785, UNB boasts a rich tradition of guiding students in understanding history. Our history department's graduate programs analyze varied accounts of societies, institutions, and cultures to better comprehend our modern world. Students gain essential skills in critical analysis, professional writing, and advanced interpretation while delving into this captivating field.

About half of our graduate students specialize in Canadian History, with many concentrating on Atlantic Canadian regional studies. These areas benefit from our affiliated research centers: The Atlantic Canada Studies Centre and the Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society. UNB history alumni pursue fulfilling careers in museums, archives, cultural organizations, government, business, and academic positions. The Department of Historical Studies currently enrolls around 50 MA and PhD students.
