Jazz students at the University of Toronto benefit from an intimate, specialized program within a prestigious and diverse academic environment. The university offers limitless possibilities for personal development. A significant part of the curriculum involves participation in small jazz combos, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Jazz Orchestras.
Participants focus on honing improvisation techniques, expanding their repertoire, and refining ensemble and performance abilities. Rehearsals and concerts also serve as platforms for students to showcase and refine their original arrangements and compositions. Live performances are given top priority, with each ensemble presenting at least three concerts annually. Students perform in multiple ensembles across various venues such as The Rex Jazz Bar, Walter Hall in the Faculty of Music, Upper Jazz at 90 Wellesley, and Hart House Jazz at Oscars. The academic year culminates with a recording session that captures each ensemble's artistic evolution.
The program's foundation lies in respecting jazz heritage while embracing contemporary innovations in performance and composition. By fostering collaboration and individual expression, U of T Jazz cultivates musicians who gain the expertise, confidence, and support to pioneer new directions in music. Graduate studies at both master's and doctoral levels maintain the University of Toronto's rigorous academic expectations while providing flexible learning opportunities that nurture artistic advancement through personalized coursework.
