Toronto and the University of Toronto's Music program share a distinguished legacy in historical performance. Tafelmusik, a world-famous ensemble-in-residence at UofT, along with The Toronto Consort (specializing in medieval-renaissance music) and baroque specialists Opera Atelier, all maintain strong ties to UofT through faculty and alumni collaborations. The Early Music program has further expanded this tradition with the Schola Cantorum ensemble, enabling students to collaborate with professionals from groups like Tafelmusik and the visiting Theatre of Early Music. Additionally, classically trained instrumentalists (strings, winds, keyboards) can explore baroque instruments and performance techniques through specialized offerings.
