The Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) program caters to accomplished performers seeking to elevate their artistry while preparing for university-level teaching positions. This advanced program combines intensive creative development with rigorous academic coursework, encompassing music history, theory, and specialized disciplines. Performance candidates undertake additional projects exploring performance techniques and musical literature alongside core theoretical and historical studies.
Our Opera Division presents three major annual productions with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra at UBC, complemented by four Opera Tea Concerts and two Singer Behind the Song events featuring international opera stars who perform, share insights, and lead student masterclasses. We maintain strong partnerships with leading arts organizations like Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Bard on the Beach, and Vancouver Bach Choir. International opportunities include summer collaborations with the European Music Academy (Czech Republic), Opera Galas at JK Tyl Opera House (Plzen), performances for Musikalischer Damenclub (Nürnberg), and occasional Asian concert tours. Doctoral candidates expand their skills through Song Interpretation, Contemporary Players, Early Music Ensemble, or Chamber Music participation. The program offers two specialization tracks: Operatic Performance or Voice Performance, both requiring recital and operatic performances alongside advanced coursework in music theory and musicology. Designed to cultivate exceptional performers and scholars, the program fosters interdisciplinary research and collaborative projects across the university community.
