This intensive, studio-focused program provides artists with the chance to cultivate both practical skills and theoretical knowledge within a stimulating environment supported by experienced faculty members, including practicing artists, art historians, and educators. Specializations include painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and digital/integrated media. Typically spanning two years, the program fosters artistic development through seminars, critiques, and committee discussions, creating a space for self-reflection, evolution, and creative exploration. Students are encouraged to experiment as they situate their work within broader art historical and critical frameworks.
The Master of Fine Arts degree in studio art requires 18 credit units of coursework plus a thesis exhibition and seminar. Students should plan for at least two years to finish the program, balancing coursework with consistent studio practice. Dedicated studio spaces are available for first- and second-year participants.
The University of Saskatchewan's M.F.A. program welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and experience levels, without discrimination based on age, race, ethnicity, disability, or gender.
Note: The program does not cover design, fashion, illustration, architecture, traditional film, commercial animation, or applied arts. While related work may be included in portfolios, applicants should primarily showcase contemporary studio art pieces, demonstrating established practice in this field.
