The Diversity and Social Justice Studies program at UPEI delves into academic research and theoretical frameworks surrounding identity markers (including gender, sexuality, race) and their connections to power dynamics and knowledge systems. Students engage with foundational and interdisciplinary courses that analyze identity as an investigative lens, study how social distinctions are formed, and assess how these factors influence societal frameworks, cultural norms, and academic inquiry. This program emphasizes how social identities profoundly affect lived experiences, examining how identity awareness transforms our understanding of social systems. It critically examines the concept of "difference," highlighting its frequent ties to power imbalances, and investigates how characteristics like gender, race, sexuality, (dis)ability, and nationality shape individuals' global positioning - ultimately informing visions of a fairer society. The program generates innovative scholarship that demonstrates how identity awareness transforms both knowledge acquisition and social action.
