The Department of Classics and Religious Studies provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Religious Studies. The Religious Studies division approaches religious phenomena through academic teaching and research, treating them with the same scholarly rigor as any other observable human experience. This interdisciplinary field incorporates historical, sociological, psychological, and anthropological perspectives while acknowledging the diversity of global religious traditions and their interrelationships. Researchers investigate religious expressions through comparative analysis of past and present manifestations, maintaining a non-normative stance toward all traditions.
The curriculum emphasizes Canadian religious traditions (including Indigenous spiritual practices) alongside comparative cultural studies and Graeco-Roman religious systems. The comparative approach enables examination of religious phenomena within their specific cultural frameworks, utilizing anthropological, historical, psychological, and sociological methodologies.
At the master's level, students may participate in the interdisciplinary Feminist and Gender Studies program, which combines their primary discipline with gender-focused analyses. This option is available to students across various faculties including arts, education, health sciences, law, social sciences, and counseling/spirituality at Saint Paul University. Successful candidates receive their primary degree with a "specialization in Feminist and Gender Studies" designation.
