The Master of Theology (ThM) program provides an opportunity for in-depth theological study beyond foundational degree requirements. This advanced program features doctoral-level coursework while being significantly shorter than a PhD and accommodating flexible study schedules. The degree is awarded jointly by the University of Toronto and the student's affiliated college, with six of TST's seven member colleges participating in this collaborative program (excluding St. Augustine's Seminary, which focuses solely on basic degrees). Students may complete the ThM program either full-time or part-time, with duration options ranging from one (1) year up to six (6) years.
Participants engage in both cooperative learning environments and self-directed research development.
While following core program guidelines and specific area requirements, students enjoy significant flexibility to customize their academic path in collaboration with their faculty advisor.
The program offers two distinct pathways that can serve as preparation for doctoral studies: either coursework combined with a thesis, or coursework paired with an extended research project. Detailed information about these options can be found in the Program Structure section under Options 1 and 2.
