The English Department provides Master of Arts programs (featuring coursework, a major research paper, or thesis) and a Doctor of Philosophy in English. These programs prepare students for advanced scholarship in British, Canadian, and American literature, grounded in comprehensive literary history and contemporary critical and cultural theories. Renowned for its yearly Canadian Literature Symposium and accomplished faculty, the department consistently receives top ratings from the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies (OCGS).
A CO-OP option is available for master's students, which can be added to either the coursework or major research paper track.
The department also engages in collaborative programs, including Feminist and Gender Studies and Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the master's level, and Canadian Studies at the doctoral level. Additional details can be found under "Program Requirements."
The master's-level Feminist and Gender Studies collaborative program welcomes students from various disciplines—including arts, education, health sciences, law, social sciences, and counseling and spirituality (Saint Paul University)—who wish to integrate Feminist and Gender Studies perspectives into their primary field. Graduates earn a master's degree in their main discipline with a "specialization in Feminist and Gender Studies."
