The program centers on French literature, tracing the development of ideas and literary domains while providing research training in French linguistics. This distinctive interdisciplinary curriculum combines specializations in both French Literature and French Linguistics, with all courses conducted exclusively in French across York University's campuses.
You'll explore French literature and the French language as spoken in France, French Canada, and global Francophone communities (such as Professor Szmidt's work on North African literature and Professor R. Mougeon's studies on Canadian French and immersion French).
Students engage directly in research activities: serving as graduate or research assistants to faculty; for Linguistics students, participating in Glendon's Centre for Research on Language Contact; and presenting their work at student-led colloquia. Non-native French speakers must demonstrate advanced French proficiency for program admission.
