The Master of Arts in English program lets you tailor your studies by selecting either English Literature or Creative Writing as your focus. The English Literature track enables you to examine diverse literary works spanning poetry, novels, nonfiction, digital content, and even interactive media like video games. Guided by our experienced faculty, you'll push past conventional academic limits while investigating multiple formats and styles. Throughout this exploration, you'll maintain scholarly rigor through our department's strong emphasis on literary history.

For the Creative Writing concentration, you'll refine your craft alongside fellow writers. The program includes seminars to deepen your appreciation of various works while you develop your thesis under faculty mentorship aligned with your creative interests. You'll enjoy the liberty to pursue your artistic goals and develop your unique writing style in Montreal's thriving cultural scene. The program welcomes thesis proposals in both conventional and experimental formats, including digital platforms.

Qualification Requirements

The MA program, with the exception of the Creative Writing option, requires an Honours degree or its equivalent in English with a minimum of a B+ (3.30 GPA) average.
The Creative Writing option requires a major in English Literature or its equivalent with a minimum of a B+ (3.30 GPA) average.
Portfolio submission, as outlined on the English Department website.

IELTS - 6.5 with at least a score of 6.5 in each of the four components. Scores below 6.0 - No Admission.
TOEFL IBT - 90 or higher and no part under 20 in each of the four components. Scores below 80 - No Admission.
DET - Duolingo English Test - Score above 120 - Score below 120 - No Admission.
