The Graduate Program in Native Studies enables students pursuing primary research to earn an M.A. or Ph.D. degree. Our program allows for focused study on First Nation, Inuit, and Métis histories, cultures, and social/theoretical concerns. Specialization areas encompass: Indigenous land, resource, and constitutional rights; governance systems; political studies; economic and environmental development; cultural identity; modern Indigenous literature; Native cinema; language studies; gender topics; justice matters; post-colonial historical analysis and critique. Our graduate curriculum incorporates Indigenous viewpoints in both instruction and scholarship. Students complete required courses within Native Studies while selecting electives from other departments. With its research-focused approach, the program mandates thesis completion for both MA and Ph.D. candidates. The doctoral track involves coursework alongside significant research work. Typical completion time - 4 years.
