UFV's 21-credit Diaspora Studies certificate explores the movement and relocation of communities across international boundaries, shaped by historical, political, and social factors. Combining perspectives from English, Anthropology, History, India-Canada Studies, Political Science, and Sociology, this program equips you to become a reflective, knowledgeable, and active participant in our interconnected global society. The program begins with a foundational "Culture and Theory of Diaspora" course examining diasporic experiences in contemporary, postcolonial, and worldwide settings. Students can fulfill the certificate requirements through either academic coursework or a practical internship/service learning pathway.

Qualification Requirements

UFV students who have completed at least 45 university-level credits are eligible to take the Diaspora Studies certificate. This certificate is intended for students who wish to complete it at the same time as they pursue another program. Students must ensure that they meet course prerequisites. Visiting exchange students may wish to complete this certificate as part of their study abroad experience, and will be accepted upon recommendation by UFV International and approval of their proposed program of study. English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12. Students may also present English 12, English Literature 12, English 12 First Peoples; all with a minimum C+ grade, International Baccalaureate English A (standard level or higher level), Advanced Placement English, or equivalent. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) — IBT score of 88 with no section below 20, or paper-based score of 570 with a TWE (essay) score of 4.5 or higher. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Academic format — score of at least 6.5., with no band score less than 6.0. MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) — score of at least 85. CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language) — score of at least 70.
