Within the Disability Studies (DS) program, we guide students in reconsidering and reshaping perspectives on disability. Through examples of effective inclusion practices, we demonstrate how support systems can expand opportunities for individuals with disabilities and highlight the benefits of embracing this diversity. Our approach employs thought-provoking frameworks from social sciences and humanities to challenge conventional views that disabilities require fixing or curing, or that clear boundaries exist around disability identity. Instead, we reveal how systemic ableism creates exclusionary educational, legal, and policy structures - demonstrating why this represents a societal loss.
Our inquiry-based teaching methods equip students to critically examine intricate social and economic issues. Learners apply these analytical frameworks to contemporary examples from media, education, business, and current events, gaining practical skills to identify and address such challenges in their professional and personal lives after graduation.
