Master of Fine Arts design students gain hands-on experience across theatre, opera, and film productions in diverse settings. Graduates leave the program with substantial professional experience and specialized knowledge in their chosen fields.
U.B.C.'s MFA in Directing program emphasizes practical training through an in-depth exploration of directing techniques. The program's core philosophy involves bringing working professionals together for two years to critically examine and refine their craft. Student directors at U.B.C. can choose to work across three distinct performance venues: the 400-seat proscenium Frederic Wood Theatre, the adaptable Telus Studio within the Chan Centre, and the intimate black-box Dorothy Somerset Studio Theatre. The program fosters a collaborative artistic community where directing students work alongside emerging actors, designers, production teams, scholars, and playwrights to develop their skills, often leading to lasting professional relationships. Since Theatre at UBC operates within a combined Theatre and Film department, directing students can also experiment with film techniques. As one of Canada's longest-running MFA directing programs, U.B.C. has produced numerous working directors, artistic leaders, and academic faculty members.
