The MFA program focuses on guiding students to explore both art creation and theory within the vibrant academic setting of a leading university, while engaging with both local and global art communities. This degree serves as the primary credential for teaching visual arts at college level, with many students gaining hands-on teaching experience through assistantships in foundational courses.

Every MFA candidate is provided with a personal studio space (around 250 sq. ft.) and full access to the department's advanced facilities, including a cutting-edge Photo/Digital lab, Printmaking studio, and Workshop. The program features rigorous weekly studio seminars that foster critical dialogue about current trends in contemporary art, visual culture, and cultural theory. Students complement their artistic practice with academic coursework, culminating in a Major Paper presentation and final exhibition. These include public presentations during their final summer and critiques at their graduation show. Regular Open Studios, cross-departmental critiques, and curated exhibitions amplify students' visibility within the art world and expand their professional networks.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants to the MFA in visual art normally hold a BFA, BA, or BEd degree with a major in studio arts. This bachelor’s degree normally requires four years of study with a B+ average in third and fourth year-level coursework. From Quebec, a three-year bachelor’s degree is acceptable provided the Diplome d’Etudes Collegiales (D.E.C.) has been previously awarded. It is strongly advised that, at minimum, an applicant has 18 academic credits of non-studio courses at the 300 level or above, with at least a B+ (76%) standing in each. This is to ensure that, if admitted, the student will benefit from the academic components of the program.
