This Master of Education (M.Ed.) program combines the core requirements of all Special Education graduate programs with specialized theory and practical components. The initial 18 months fulfill the qualifications for Interim CAEDHH Certification (Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing). Full admission is awarded to candidates who: a) have completed prerequisite coursework, b) hold teaching certification, and c) meet sign language proficiency standards. Previous experience working with deaf or hard of hearing individuals is highly valued. Teaching certification is mandatory. Applicants must clearly indicate DEAFNESS on their application. Those lacking prerequisites may still enroll but will need to complete the missing courses during their graduate studies.

Qualification Requirements

International applicants - if your transcript does not state that your degree has been conferred, we require a scanned copy of your degree certificate. If your transcript and degree certificate are not in English, we require both a scanned copy in the original language and a certified English translation. Additional information can be found on the Grad and Postdoctoral Studies website. The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B plus range (76% at UBC). IELTS - A minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component. TOEFL IBT - 90 for the internet-based exam (with minimum component scores of 22 (reading, listening) and 21 (writing, speaking).
