We aim to motivate, involve, and challenge educators to explore, investigate, and demonstrate curriculum and teaching approaches that foster deep engagement with visual arts in cultural and social contexts. Located within a major research university on ancestral Musqueam territory, the Art Education Program works to:
Promote and undertake research within an energetic, cooperative academic environment that examines methods and subjects pertinent to visual arts in culture and society.
Demonstrate, cultivate, and implement socially conscious and environmentally mindful teaching approaches centered on visual arts in cultural contexts across various settings.
Offer guidance and collaborate with arts and cultural institutions and experts at local, national, and global levels.
Our Art Education faculty pursue varied research interests, supporting broad student exploration in areas including: arts-based research, a/r/tography, art curriculum development, early childhood education, teacher training, Indigenous art and pedagogy, art education history, multicultural education, museum studies, visual perception, studio practice, digital media in visual culture, theory-practice connections, and gender studies.
One to two years’ of teacher education; or a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Education. In special circumstances teacher education may be waived for those applicants who have a university degree with sufficient standing and experience related to their proposed field of study.
