Classicists explore the languages, writings, artifacts, and historical records of Ancient Greece and Rome. The Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies provides a distinctive interdisciplinary Master's degree where students can focus on Ancient Greek and Latin language and literature through coursework and thesis research. The program offers diverse courses covering archaeology and material remains, religious beliefs and myths, literary works and ancient tongues, as well as the historical and cultural developments of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East from the Bronze Age through Late Antiquity. During their second year, students develop a thesis project guided by a faculty advisor. This MA in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology stands as Canada's sole program enabling students to broaden their understanding beyond Greece and Rome, examining the interconnected cultural, material, and religious landscapes of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East through multidisciplinary studies. Our department includes ten dedicated faculty experts in Greek literature and philosophy, Latin texts and translation, Greco-Roman history, Roman legal systems, ancient theater, Greek mythology, Bronze Age archaeology, Greek artifacts, and Roman provincial archaeology. Additional faculty in Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies conduct cross-disciplinary research that consistently intersects with classical literature, art, and society.
Our active department creates customized programs to match each student's academic passions. Learners enjoy regular engagement with professors and scholarly networks throughout their studies.
Applicants for the PhD must have an MA and must have completed a minimum of 12 credits of course work at the graduate level (i.e. numbered 500 or above) in the relevant field.
