Social Studies provides an enriching academic setting with exceptional opportunities for graduate students from diverse backgrounds and interests, spanning visual culture, anti-oppressive education, gender studies, historical awareness, ethics in education, and curriculum history and politics. Beyond core coursework, the program cultivates a dynamic graduate community through speaker events, research centers, workshops, and discussion groups. Numerous faculty and students actively participate in The History Education Network.

The Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy features a PhD concentration, MA and MEd specializations in Social Studies Education, plus a secondary Teacher Education (BEd) major and a Diploma in Social Studies Education.

Qualification Requirements

Master's degree with high standing in a relevant educational discipline,

1. Scanned copies of all official transcripts
2. Three letters of recommendation
3. Evidence of English language proficiency
4. Permanent Resident Card (both sides), when applicable

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B plus range (76% at UBC).

IELTS - A minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component.
TOEFL IBT - 92 for the internet-based exam with minimum component scores of 22 (reading, listening, writing, speaking). TOEFL PBT - 580
