Classicists explore the languages, literature, artifacts, and historical records of Ancient Greece and Rome. The Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies provides a PhD in Classics with three specialization paths: Classics (focused on languages), Ancient History, or Classical Archaeology. Those in the Classics track achieve advanced proficiency in Greek and Latin, while Ancient History scholars gain mastery in at least one classical language while building complementary skills in another discipline. Classical Archaeology candidates specialize in archaeological methods and theory. All students acquire advanced reading abilities in Latin, Greek, and pertinent modern languages.

During the first two years, students broaden their knowledge through coursework and comprehensive exams before concentrating on their dissertation to become leading authorities in their specific research area.
This PhD program stands as Canada's sole offering that extends beyond Greece and Rome to examine the interconnected cultures, artifacts, and belief systems of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East through interdisciplinary study. Our department boasts ten dedicated faculty members with expertise spanning Greek literature and philosophy, Latin texts and translation, Greco-Roman history, Roman legal systems, ancient theater, Greek myths, Bronze Age excavations, Greek artifacts, and Roman provincial archaeology. Additional faculty in Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies conduct cross-disciplinary research that frequently intersects with classical texts, art, and cultural studies.
