Classicists explore the languages, literature, material artifacts, and historical records of Ancient Greece and Rome. The Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies provides a PhD in Classics with three specialization paths: Classics (focused on language studies), Ancient History, or Classical Archaeology. Those pursuing Classics gain advanced proficiency in Greek and Latin, while Ancient History scholars achieve mastery in at least one classical language while expanding their skills in an interdisciplinary secondary field. Classical Archaeology candidates specialize in archaeological methods and theory. All students acquire advanced reading abilities in Latin, Greek, and pertinent modern languages.
During the first two years, students broaden their knowledge through coursework and comprehensive exams before concentrating on their dissertation research, allowing them to develop unparalleled expertise in their specific area of study.
