The M.A. program offers students a choice between thesis-based and course-based tracks, both designed to cultivate graduates who critically and thoughtfully engage with diverse musical traditions while participating in cross-disciplinary academic discourse.
The curriculum exposes students to a wide array of musical methodologies. Faculty members have research expertise spanning music and wellness, global music historiography, canon formation theories, ownership dynamics in experimental music, and the effects of streaming platforms, legislation, and intellectual property laws on the music business. Professors actively mentor students pursuing varied thesis subjects.
The Music Department provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts, Master of Music, Doctor of Music, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The MA and PhD programs encompass Musicology, Music Theory, Ethnomusicology, Popular Music Studies, and interdisciplinary music research. The MMus degree features concentrations in Performance (keyboard, piano pedagogy, orchestral instruments, wind band conducting, voice), Choral Conducting, and Composition. The DMus program focuses on piano/organ performance, choral conducting, and composition, with potential consideration for other performance specializations through individual assessment.
