The Master of Music (M.Mus.) program in performance and composition is designed for students who have demonstrated exceptional skill during their undergraduate studies and show potential for continued artistic development. This degree serves as either a terminal qualification for entering the professional music field or as preparation for doctoral studies. Performance students showcase their abilities through recitals or opera performances instead of writing a thesis, while composition students present a collection of original works. The typical program duration is two years.
Keyboard students at UBC—including pianists, harpsichordists, and organists—experience well-rounded artistic and personal development. The Music program offers diverse opportunities in chamber music, large ensembles, historical and modern performance groups, keyboard pedagogy, and repertoire studies.
UBC Music fosters artistic development through numerous performance platforms that cultivate meaningful musical journeys. Specialized ensembles focusing on Baroque and contemporary music expand performance possibilities beyond traditional repertoire, while collaborative work with vocalists and instrumentalists plays a vital role in students' musical education.
Our distinguished faculty members are internationally recognized performers and recording artists dedicated to nurturing their students' creative potential.
The harpsichord M.Mus. program provides exceptional professional preparation. Harpsichord students participate in the UBC Baroque Mentorship Program, a unique partnership between the School of Music and the professional Pacific Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Prof. Alexander Weimann.
