Our Master of Arts (MA) in Community Music is an interdisciplinary program combining theoretical knowledge with practical application to cultivate leadership abilities in community music settings. Throughout this program, you'll undertake a hands-on community service placement and conduct a research initiative. The culminating experience involves publicly presenting your research findings in a real-world community environment, showcasing your leadership capabilities.
The MA in Community Music is available for both full-time and part-time study.
This program caters to community organizers currently involved in - or aspiring to create - musical initiatives across diverse settings such as educational institutions, religious spaces, private teaching studios, retirement communities, neighborhood centers, and other music-making venues. Established music professionals can enhance their expertise through academic study and practical engagement, while recent graduates will find this program builds naturally upon their undergraduate musical training and experiences.
Career Paths
Community Music equips you with valuable skills for various professional roles, including: ensemble directors and program coordinators
educational instructors (both classroom and private studio), correctional facility support staff, arts organization administrators
arts enterprise managers, school and music camp directors
recreational music coordinators for senior living communities, youth program facilitators, religious or spiritual music directors
Students must have the following:
English Proficiency
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
TOEFL iBT: minimum score of 89, with minimum skill scores of 21 in each of the skills tests (speaking, writing, reading and listening).
Paper-based TOEFL: minimum of 573.
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS): minimum score of 7.
Pearson Test of English (PTE): minimum score of 60.
The Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: minimum score of 70.
