The Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Graduate Program provides thesis-based MSc and PhD degrees under the direction of Dr. Ezekiel Weis, a University of Alberta Professor. Graduate students in our department are empowered to pursue innovative, interdisciplinary research aimed at enhancing patient-focused eye care. Students gain access to state-of-the-art campus laboratories along with our network of off-site clinical and research facilities.

Our department grants MSc and PhD degrees in Medical Sciences (Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences) through either postgraduate training for medical graduates or as standalone programs for bachelor's degree holders. Students can conduct research across diverse ophthalmology fields where faculty maintain active investigations. Key research focuses include visual electrophysiology, retinal degeneration models and treatments, eye anatomy, and ocular genetics. Qualification Requirements

The minimum requirements a student must have for admission into the MSc or PhD in Medical Sciences programs are as follows: 1) an undergraduate degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate or graduate study at the University of Alberta, or equivalent qualification from another institution, 2) a minimum TOEFL score of 95 with at least 21 per section (Internet-based) or equivalent; CAEL minimum score of 70 with at least 70 on each subtest; or IELTS minimum score of 7.0 with at least 6 on each band, and 3) meet Departmental criteria over and above the minimal requirements of the Medical Sciences Graduate Program. Admission to the MSc or PhD in Medical Sciences program is dependent on the recommendation of the Medical Sciences Graduate Program Committee.

The application deadlines: International applicants must provide all required admission documents at least six months prior to the start of the term they are applying for (winter, spring, summer, fall) in order to allow sufficient time for processing your application and obtaining study permits and visa applications.
