Our exercise specialists analyze the biological processes linked to physical activity across diverse groups, such as athletes, expectant mothers, and workers in strenuous occupations. The Physical Education Department was founded in 1945 as part of the Education Faculty. Under Professor Maury Van Vliet's leadership, it initially concentrated on collegiate sports and mandatory physical education courses for first- and second-year students. By 1954, it evolved into the School of Physical Education, achieving Faculty status in 1964—a first among British Commonwealth institutions.
Over the years, the Faculty has produced numerous professionals in coaching, athletics, research, teaching, and kinesiology. Organized sports and physical training have been integral to the university since its 1908 founding, with the men's Varsity Ice Hockey team being the inaugural elite squad. The "Golden Bears" name originated in 1935, followed by "Pandas" in 1945. Today, the University of Alberta's Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics program remains one of Canada's most extensive, varied, and triumphant university sports initiatives.
