Our experts in this field employ diverse academic approaches to examine topics such as sports tourism, outdoor activities, environmental preservation, and leisure patterns. Founded in 1945 as part of the Faculty of Education, the Department of Physical Education initially concentrated on intercollegiate sports and mandatory physical education courses for first- and second-year students under Professor Maury Van Vliet's leadership. By 1954, it evolved into the School of Physical Education, achieving Faculty status in 1964—a first among British Commonwealth institutions.
Over the years, the Faculty has produced numerous professionals in coaching, athletics, research, teaching, and kinesiology. Competitive sports and structured physical education have been integral to the university since its founding in 1908, with the men's Varsity Ice Hockey team marking the campus's inaugural elite squad. The "Golden Bears" name originated in 1935, followed by "Pandas" in 1945. Today, the University of Alberta's Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics program remains one of Canada's most extensive, diverse, and consistently successful university sports initiatives.
