Scholars in this field explore diverse subjects, spanning biomechanics to fundamental neural mechanisms governing movement and perception, as well as the interplay between physical motion and cognition. The Physical Education Department was founded in 1945 as an educational division under the Faculty of Education. Professor Maury Van Vliet launched its programs with an initial emphasis on collegiate sports initiatives and mandatory introductory physical education courses.
By 1954, the Department evolved into the School of Physical Education, achieving Faculty status in 1964—a pioneering milestone within the British Commonwealth.
Over the years, the Faculty has nurtured countless professionals, including coaches, athletes, scientists, educators, and movement specialists.
Athletic programs and structured physical education have been integral to university life since its founding in 1908, with the men's Varsity Ice Hockey team standing as the inaugural elite squad on campus. The "Golden Bears" nickname originated in 1935, followed by "Pandas" in 1945. Today, the University of Alberta's Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics remains one of Canada's most extensive, varied, enduring, and triumphant university sports programs.
