At StFX Modern Languages, students have the opportunity to study French, Spanish, German, or Mi'kmaq while exploring the connection between language and culture. Our program provides comprehensive instruction in language skills, cultural studies, writing techniques, and literary analysis spanning various historical periods. With all faculty members holding doctoral qualifications and maintaining small class sizes, we create an ideal setting for immersive language education. Through our unique Service Learning initiative, students gain practical experience by applying their classroom knowledge in local communities and international settings.
For those seeking formal recognition of their French language skills, we provide a French proficiency certificate that appears on official transcripts. Given French's status as one of Canada's official languages, bilingual graduates often enjoy enhanced career prospects.
Our department regularly receives prestigious awards from the French, Swiss, Argentinean, and German embassies for outstanding students. Additionally, StFX facilitates immersive study abroad experiences in France or Mexico through exchange programs and service learning opportunities.
The French honours degree requires completion of 60 credits in FREN courses (excluding FREN 111112), with mandatory enrollment in FREN 312(215) and a minimum of 33 credits at the 300-400 level. With departmental approval, students may apply 12 credits from related disciplines. Honours candidates must complete FREN 492, a three-credit senior seminar involving a 6,000-word thesis written in French.
