Every Modern Languages professor at StFX holds a doctoral degree and leads small classes, creating the perfect setting for personalized language education. Through the unique Service Learning program, you can apply classroom knowledge in real-world community and international settings.
The department provides a French proficiency certificate to formally acknowledge your language skills on your academic record. Given French's status as an official Canadian language, bilingualism enhances career prospects post-graduation. Annually, Modern Languages students earn prestigious awards from French, Swiss, Argentinean, and German embassies. Additionally, StFX facilitates immersive study experiences in France or Mexico through exchange and service learning opportunities.
To major in Spanish, students must complete 12 credits at StFX, participate in the Study Abroad Program for up to 18 credits, and complete at least 6 advanced Spanish credits (300/400 level) upon return.
Graduates of our program gain professional Spanish fluency, deep understanding of Hispanic cultures, and valuable international experience that employers highly value.
Applicants must have English and four university preparatory courses in grade 12.
Students with an IELTS score of 6.5 and no band below 6.0 will be deemed to have satisfied the English language requirements for admissions to undergraduate programs. Other acceptable tests include: MELAB (minimum score required is 90), TOEFL iBT (minimum score required is 90 and no lower than 20 in each band), CAEL (minimum score required is 71), CAE (minimum score required is 180 overall and no lower than 170 in each band.
