The Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) minor is an innovative interdisciplinary program where students can select electives both within their primary field of study and across various academic disciplines. This complementary program strengthens students' core academic pursuits by cultivating diverse analytical skills.
To complete the minor, students must complete twenty-four (24) credit hours (8 courses), consisting of four (4) foundational WGSS courses and four (4) electives chosen from a broad selection across multiple departments. Additional details about the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies minor can be found in the Academic Calendar.
WGSS courses provide critical insights into how gender and intersecting power dynamics influence individuals, communities, cultural systems, knowledge production, and social justice movements. The curriculum examines not only gender's role in daily life but also how sexuality, racial inequality, class structures, geopolitical forces, ableism, and age-based hierarchies intersect with gender to shape human experiences.
The program equips students with feminist frameworks to challenge oppressive social constructions of womanhood and restrictive gender norms that limit societal participation. Globally, women's and gender studies programs are acknowledged for expanding traditional knowledge paradigms and addressing systemic biases within academic disciplines and broader social institutions.
