The Global Development Studies department at Queen's University stands among Canada's leading institutions for development studies research. Employing diverse interdisciplinary approaches, our scholars investigate the meaning of development and its implementation within our rapidly changing world. With a strong focus on social justice, we study political, economic, and cultural transformations at all levels, from local communities to international systems. Our graduate programs integrate these fundamental questions with innovative teaching and research, empowering students to examine critical issues in the field. Leveraging our department's expertise in development political economy and cultural politics, we foster a dynamic academic atmosphere for research and intercultural learning. Student research spans numerous topics connecting developed and developing nations, including trade relations, financial systems, cultural expressions, gender dynamics, and indigenous studies.
Our research-intensive Master's and PhD programs in Global Development Studies equip students with analytical frameworks and comparative methodologies to design and execute development-focused research projects. This rigorous training develops global awareness and critical analysis skills valuable for advanced social science studies, while also preparing graduates for professional paths in law, journalism, diplomacy, international commerce, and humanitarian work. Our structured core curriculum introduces students to foundational field debates, supplemented by specialized courses examining various methodological approaches and regional contexts. Beyond departmental offerings, students may enroll in relevant graduate courses across multiple disciplines including Economics, Environmental Studies, Gender Studies, Geography, and Political Science, with additional options available through other faculties such as Business, Education, Urban Planning, and Public Health.
