Queen's Law has partnered with the Economics Department to create a dual-degree program enabling students to earn both an MA and JD within three years. This initiative delivers specialized interdisciplinary education for those exploring intersections between legal studies and economic analysis, such as international trade regulations, corporate governance, antitrust laws, environmental resource management, and taxation policies. Students in the combined MA (Econ)/JD program will acquire exceptional training and a competitive edge for careers in specialized legal practice demanding economic theory expertise, advanced policy development, and academic research.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet the admission requirements of both the M.A. (Economics) and the J.D. degree programs.

For Economics:

  • Completion of an Honours B.A. in Economics or a related field (e.g. Math, Physics). Most students admitted to the M.A. will have a B+ average as a minimum.
  • Most successful applicants have undergraduate credits in statistics and quantitative methods for economics, intermediate and advanced micro- and macroeconomic theory, and two or three further upper-year courses in economics, plus courses in linear algebra and differential and integral calculus.

For Law:

  • Most successful J.D. applicants will generally have at least a B+ cumulative average and an A- average in the final two years of their undergraduate program.
  • All applicants must write the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Minimum LSAT score to be considered for admission to this program would be 160 (80th) percentile.

English language requirements

Applicants must have TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT): The minimum overall score is 88, made up of the minimum scores in each component test as follows: Writing test: 24/30; Speaking test: 22/30; Reading test: 22/30; Listening test: 20/30; MELAB: 80 (minimum overall score); IELTS: 7 (minimum score, academic module); PTE Academic: 65 (minimum overall score).
