The Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology – Applied Social Research program emphasizes practical approaches to social theories and research methods for analyzing and tackling societal issues in northern, rural, and Indigenous communities across Canada and globally. This interdisciplinary program draws on faculty expertise spanning Sociology, Health and Population Studies, Gerontology, Anthropology, Environmental Science, and Criminology. Through community engagement, government partnerships, research-focused coursework, and hands-on practicums, students develop strong theoretical knowledge and advanced research skills for conducting applied studies, policy analysis, and program evaluations in public, nonprofit, and private sectors.
The Thesis Research Project (TRP) offers two completion paths: a two-year Full-Time option (six consecutive terms) or a four-year Flex-Time option (twelve consecutive terms). Both formats support students conducting original empirical research on pressing social challenges affecting rural, northern, and other communities domestically and internationally. These pathways prepare graduates for academic advancement or research-oriented careers in community organizations, government agencies, or private institutions. Each student works with a TRP committee comprising a faculty supervisor, two additional professors, and an external advisor from a relevant government, community, or private organization tied to their research focus.
