Researchers in this field examine how racial, ethnic, and national identities serve as significant or hierarchical factors in individuals' experiences. Immigration plays a key role in influencing racial and ethnic diversity across Canada and other destination countries. With its remarkable ethnic and racial variety, along with hosting one of the globe's highest immigrant populations, Vancouver offers a perfect setting for investigating these topics.
UBC's sociology program has a rich legacy of participating in community-focused and service-learning initiatives, offering students practical opportunities to conduct research for partner organizations throughout Vancouver (such as RainCity Housing, SPEC, City of Vancouver, Neighborhood House Association, and Be The Change). The department maintains a robust co-op program and operates the Immigrant Vancouver Ethnographic Field School (in collaboration with the Anthropology Department). Scholars specializing in gender and sexuality investigate evolving gender dynamics and sexual identities across different eras and geographical contexts.

Qualification Requirements
To be considered for admission to the MA program in full standing, an applicant should.
Hold a four-year degree in sociology or a cognate field (i.e. a closely related field with significant sociological content)
Attained first-class standing (80% at UBC) in their upper-level courses, especially their sociology courses.
Applicants are required to scan official transcripts of all previous academic work from all post-secondary institutions. Transcripts must be:
Validated by the institution's registrar and on official, secure university letterhead (or, if provided by the institution, in the form of a secure .pdf)
Uploaded as .pdf documents and clearly labelled
Accompanied by the grading key for the institution
Translated by a certified translator if in a language other than English or French
Transcripts in the form of a print-out from the student's online records, transcripts with no grading scale, and transcripts in languages other than English or French will not be evaluated.
IELTS - A minimum overall band score of 7 is required with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component.
