Our dynamic graduate studies environment nurtures intellectual curiosity and analytical skills in literary and cultural research. This MA program integrates the examination of English literature across all eras with critical theory and cultural studies.
Applicants choose between two program options:
Coursework culminating in an independent public humanities project
Coursework paired with a substantial research project
The program emphasizes student-centered training in research and teaching, equipping graduates with exceptional critical thinking, analytical, and communication abilities. By developing creative thinking, precise writing and speaking skills, attentive listening, and effective problem-solving, an English and Cultural Studies Master's degree creates diverse career opportunities in today's unpredictable job market.
For both MA in English and Cultural Studies streams, the minimum admission requirement is a four-year undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Honours), with a major concentration in English, Cultural Studies, or a related discipline, and with an average of B+ in at least 36 units (12 half or 6 full courses) beyond the introductory level in English, Cultural Studies or a related discipline. For MRP stream applicants, the admissions committee gives additional consideration to candidates’ tentative project descriptions, outlined in the Statement of Interest, to ensure a match with supervisory capacity among available faculty members. For both streams: Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to provide an official record of the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
