The Faculty of Education at Lakehead University provides a Master of Education program tailored to align with your professional aspirations and academic pursuits. Our MEd program delivers a distinctive educational experience that engages with contemporary developments in both teaching practices and scholarly research. The program features two primary concentrations: Educational Studies and Education for Change.
The Education for Change track presents a forward-thinking approach to graduate studies, enabling you to obtain your Master's degree with specialized focus areas including Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE), Indigenous Education (IE), or Social Justice Education (SJE). These specializations can optionally be paired with Gender and Women's Studies.
Within the Educational Studies concentration, you can complete your Master's while exploring pedagogical research, theoretical frameworks, and practical applications across diverse educational settings, with additional specialization options in Gerontology or Gender and Women's Studies. Our adaptable MEd program accommodates working professionals through multiple completion pathways: Thesis, Portfolio, or Course-based options. Both concentrations support diverse academic interests and offer full-time or flexible study schedules. The faculty proudly hosts two Canada Research Chairs (in Environmental Education and Arts Integrated Research), along with the Centre for Place and Sustainability Studies, the Multi-Data Convergence Laboratory, and the Canadian Journal of Environmental Education.
Through an interdisciplinary partnership, the Gerontology Program works closely with our Faculty of Education to offer innovative learning opportunities. Students benefit from cross-disciplinary resources and collaborative academic environments. The program examines gerontological research and theory, with thesis or portfolio projects (when applicable) completed through the partner department while maintaining a gerontology-focused approach.
