The Sociology Department provides an advanced degree program focused on expanding students' understanding of their social environments while developing autonomous, analytical thinking about key societal matters. Our curriculum now includes a coursework-focused graduate option in Sociology, available both in the general program and within our three specialized tracks. After completing their initial term, students may apply to transition to the thesis-based program.
A Sociology degree serves as excellent preparation for various professions including social services, legal fields, media, and healthcare. Graduates frequently pursue roles in education or vocational guidance, while others find opportunities in public sector, rehabilitation programs, social services, and corporate environments. Our emphasis on research methodology makes sociology graduates particularly valuable for data collection and analysis across diverse industries. The discipline examines all facets of human interaction, from personal relationships and organizational structures to large-scale social phenomena with national and international impact. Key areas of sociological inquiry encompass healthcare systems, family structures, criminal behavior, technological impacts, mass media, societal transformation, economic systems, gender studies, educational institutions, class disparities, and various forms of bias, among numerous other topics.
Through our Gerontology Program, we partner with four other academic departments to deliver a cutting-edge, multidisciplinary approach to aging studies. Participants benefit from diverse academic resources and collaborative opportunities across related fields. The program examines current gerontological research and theories, with thesis or capstone projects completed through partner departments maintaining an aging-focused perspective.
